March 04, 2013: An advanced version of the operational Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system (MBRLS) has been tested a number of times over the last few weeks on the country's east coast ranges. The Indian Army currently has four rocket regiments armed with the base version of the indigenously-developed Pinaka. The tests took place at the Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE) of the DRDO.
The tests were conducted to establish flight stability after launch, accuracy and firing consistency—all parameters that have been proven on the operational system. The Pinaka has proven to be an effective artillery-support force multiplier, with the Army providing steady feedback on the system's performance to DRDO, fuelling the effort towards a higher performance system. The Pinaka has already been fielded in multiple exercises and interest has also been evinced from certain friendly countries in the system. The Mk.2 version of the Pinaka could arm at least four more rocket regiments following a thorough test schedule. The Pinaka operates alongside the Indian Army's Russian-built Smerch MBRL systems.
